  27. 1.  WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  28. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  29.   Welcome! You have chosen a powerful Windows image, text, and video
  30.   capture program that allows you many options. SnagIt is for any
  31.   computer user who needs to capture more than a few screens for
  32.   any purpose, such as:
  34.   o  Capturing screens and menus in a Windows program to create
  35.      documentation.
  37.   o  Professional image processing and manipulation, e.g. shrink
  38.      screen captures while maintaining image readability.
  40.   o  Saving a long window, even if it scrolls off-screen, with a
  41.      single capture instead of clipping them together.
  43.   o  Creating AVI movies from live program action on your computer 
  44.      screen.  Also record audio at the same time from your microphone.
  46.   o  Creating a multimedia program or computer based training (CBT).
  48.   o  Reducing the number of repetitious steps required to capture many
  49.      screens.
  51.   o  Saving a screen to e-mailing it to someone else.
  53.   o  Capturing text from applications with no cut or paste option.
  55.   o  Easy management of large numbers of captures of any type; images, 
  56.      text or video.
  58.   o  Integrating SnagIt's capture functionality into other
  59.      applications through its Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) support.
  61.   SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way
  62.   to capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in
  63.   1990.  In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls
  64.   SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."

  67. 2.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  68. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  69.   In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
  71.   o  An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware
  72.      requirements for your version of Microsoft Windows.
  74.   o  Microsoft Windows 95/98, or Windows NT 4.0 (or higher), or 
  75.      installed and configured on your system.  SnagIt Studio requires
  76.      Windows 95 B or higher.
  78.   o  A mouse or other pointing device
  80.   o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
  81.      bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
  82.      printers that Windows supports.  Plotters are not recommended for
  83.      use with SnagIt due to their inability to print bitmaps.)

  86. 3.  SETUP AND CONFIGURATION

  88. 3.1 Installation Instructions
  90.   The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  91.   application.  You must have Windows 95/98 or NT ( 4.0 or later ) 
  92.   installed prior to installing SnagIt.  To install SnagIt, perform
  93.   the following steps:
  95.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  97.   2. Insert the SnagIt CDROM into the CDROM drive.  If the setup
  98.      program does not automatically start, or if you have SnagIt 
  99.      on diskettes, perform the remaining steps.
  101.   3. From the Start menu, select Run
  103.   4. In the dialog box, enter:
  104.           a:setup
  105.      (you will need to change the drive letter in the command line 
  106.      above to match your current CDROM drive or your floppy drive if
  107.      you are installing from diskettes)
  109.   5. Click on the OK button.
  111.   6. Follow the instructions given by the setup wizard for correct
  112.      installation of the product.
  115. 3.2  Installed Files
  117.   The SnagIt setup program copies the following files to your
  118.   computer during installation:

  151. 3.3  Uninstall Instructions
  153.   If after installing SnagIt, you find it necessary to remove the 
  154.   software from your computer, perform the following steps:
  156.   1. Run the Windows Control Panel
  158.   2. Open the Add/Remove Programs applet from Control Panel.
  160.   3. Select SnagIt from the list of applications that can uninstalled
  161.      by Windows.
  163.   4. Click on the Add/Remove button to uninstall SnagIt.
  165.   If the uninstall program encounters errors, see the following 
  166.   section for manual uninstall instructions.
  169. 3.4  Manual Uninstall Instructions
  171.   If you encountered a problem during the uninstall, here are the 
  172.   steps you can take to manually uninstall SnagIt from your computer.
  174.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  176.   2. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Taskbar. Now
  177.      configure your Start Menu Programs by clicking on the Advanced
  178.      button.
  180.   3. Find the program group in which SnagIt was installed. Click
  181.      once on the SnagIt filename to highlight it. Press the delete
  182.      key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  184.   4. If you selected "Automatically run SnagIt when Windows starts"
  185.      during installation, delete SnagIt from the Startup group.
  187.      Follow step #2 and then find the Startup group. Click once on the
  188.      SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  189.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  191.   5. Run Windows Explorer and change to the directory in which you
  192.      installed SnagIt. Delete all the files listed in section 6.2.

  195. 4.  GETTING HELP

  197. 4.1 Using SnagIt's On-line Help
  199.   SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
  200.   subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information
  201.   you'll need to use SnagIt.
  203.   To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then
  204.   Help Index from the drop-down menu.
  206.   To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from
  207.   the Help menu.
  209.   To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type,
  210.   select System Info from the Help menu.
  212. 4.2  SnagIt Support

  227.   In any communication with TechSmith regarding a problem with SnagIt,
  228.   please clearly state the following:
  230.   o  The product name and version number.
  232.   o  Your name, address, e-mail address and telephone number.
  234.   o  Your hardware and software configuration. Go to SnagIt's
  235.      Help->Support dialog to get your diagnostic information.
  237.   o  A description of the problem, and what you were trying to do when
  238.      the problem occurred.

  241. 5.  WHAT IS NEW IN THIS VERSION?
  242. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  244.    v5.0.0  Capture profiles enables users to configure multiple 
  245.            capture configurations.  Activate a different capture at 
  246.            the press of a hot-key or mouse button.
  248.            SnagIt Studio is a companion application that allows users
  249.            to annotate their screen captures quickly and easily.
  250.            Note: This is an optional component and you may need to
  251.            download this feature separately.
  253.            A revised user interface allows users to easily activate 
  254.            captures using the mouse.  Three user interface views
  255.            are available: normal, compact, and profile.
  257.            Web output enables users to put their captures on the 
  258.            Internet.  SnagIt turns your desktop into a webcam.
  260.            An enhanced annotation filter allows users to place any 
  261.            text on the captured image or video.  Special captions 
  262.            are available for timedate, user name and computer name.
  264.            Printer output controls have been enhanced.  Users can
  265.            now specify margins and fixed size dimensions for printed 
  266.            output.
  268.            A configurable log file enables users to monitor SnagIt 
  269.            activity.  This is ideal for timer activated captures.
  271.            Added an option to print the filename in the Catalog 
  272.            Browser.
  273.            
  274.            Added support for "Exif" JPEG and TIFF files created by 
  275.            digital cameras.
  276.            
  277.            The catalog browser now support the "Desktop" special 
  278.            folder.
  279.            
  280.            Reading JPEG files is 40% faster.
  281.            
  282.            Image processing functions have been fine tuned to deliver 
  283.            increased speed and accuracy.
  285.    v5.0.1  Added a preview window to the page layout dialog.
  287.            Added support to allow the user to choose the audio 
  288.            recording device.
  290.            Improved the robustness of the audio recording thread.

  292.            Fixed problems with the initial UI frame size on systems 
  293.            with large fonts and validates startup window position.

  295.            Fixed Filters->Layout menu option which was disabled.
  297.            Fixed problems with logging errors before the CErrorLog 
  298.            object is created.
  300.            Fixed transparent flat toolbar problem.  It does not work 
  301.            correctly with comctl32.dll version 4.70.
  303.   v5.0.2   Fixed the transparency controls for the GIF file format. These
  304.    controls were not visible on the dialog.  
  306.    Fixed problem with the catalog causing a GPF fault when displaying 
  307.    bitmaps on a 256 color desktop.

  310. 6.  KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS
  311. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  313.     o  The full Text Capture feature is only available on Windows 95
  314.        /98 systems.  SnagIt will only capture text from the clipboard
  315.        on Windows NT systems.
  317.     o  SnagIt hangs on e-mail output on Windows 95 if only 16-bit
  318.        MS Mail has been configured (i.e. MAPI is in use, but neither
  319.        MS Exchange or any other 32-bit MAPI mail client has been
  320.        configured).
  322.     o  SnagIt generally cannot capture DVD video displays.
  323.     
  324.     o  SnagIt cannot directly capture audio from other applications
  325.        (e.g. Windows Media Player).  However, it is sometimes 
  326.        possible to record this audio by placing the microphone near 
  327.        your computer's speakers, or by connecting "line out" to 
  328.        "microphone in" on your sound card.
  329.     
  330.     o  SnagIt cannot capture video from applications on some 
  331.        systems that use graphics hardware acceleration for video 
  332.        playback (e.g. newer versions of Media Player and RealNetwork's
  333.        RealPlayer). It is often possible to disable the graphics 
  334.        hardware acceleration.
  336.        There are two ways to disable graphics hardware acceleration: 
  337.       
  338.        1. Disable graphics hardware acceleration globally for all 
  339.           applications using the Control Panel "System" applet. Go to 
  340.           the "Performance" tab and click the "Graphics" button under 
  341.           "Advanced settings...". Set the "Hardware acceleration" 
  342.           slider to None and hit OK. You may need to restart Windows 
  343.           to have this change apply.
  344.       
  345.        2. Disable graphics hardware acceleration for a particular 
  346.           application.  For example, in RealPlayer G2 select 
  347.           Options/Preferences from the RealPlayer menu. Go to the 
  348.           "Performance" tab and disable (uncheck) the "Use optimized 
  349.           video display" setting. You may need to stop and restart 
  350.           any movie being played to have the change take effect. 
  352.       Disabling the graphics hardware acceleration globally for all 
  353.       applications is probably the easiest way to "fix" the problem. 
  354.       Of course, with hardware acceleration disabled, video playback
  355.       may not be as smooth as it could be with acceleration enabled.
