Basically, this program plays tetris. The tetris game that it interfaces with is at http://www.freetetris.org/ To run: -Somehow make yourself able to run the program. Import it into an IDE, compile from the shell, whatever. -Before running the program, you must make sure that the Tetris game in your browser is *playing* and not occluded. -> That is, a piece should be on its way down by the time you start the program, and no windows can be on top of -> and obscuring the tetris game (the little box with the next piece must also be completely visible) -Run the program. It may take a second to calibrate itself (assuming my calibration code works on your computer, which is anything but a given), and then it should start placing pieces. -If it does really stupid things and loses extremely quickly, then it is most likely not reading the board correctly. -> If this happens, your options include: + Attempt to debug the program yourself. This would likely involve placing some ImageIO.write's wherever screengrabs are being passed around, and making sure that all is as it should be. + Send me (via email) a screenshot of your entire screen at the time of failure (after the program loses) + Declaring that seeing some guy's stupid tetris bot isn't worth all the damn trouble. -If you get a score higher than 16,492,323 (my record), I'd love to hear about it! (remember to take a screenshot) Some notes / thoughts / ramblings / gibberish: *The 'AI', such that it is, resides in MoveEvaluator.java. The constants found in the scoring function are essentially made up, with a little bit of tweaking. A logical extension of this program would be to do a genetic algorithm to find optimal constants (I've seen that done, so I haven't been incredibly motivated to do it (though that may change)). Another interesting change to the 'AI' would be to make it weight line-clearing more and more as it builds higher. *Because of the simplicity of the problem (or perhaps the naïveté of my solution), the part of the program that actually 'plays tetris' (as in, decides on the best move to make) is a tiny amount of code compared I/O portion of the program, which is responsible for reading the board from the screen and actually making moves happen. *At the time of writing, I'd been learning Haskell, and I feel that the design of the program is to some extent influenced by this. The low-level organization of the code into files is not particularly object-oriented -- most of the 'classes' are used pretty much as namespaces (that is, containing only static methods and never being instantiated). In this sense, the organization is ugly because I have all these .java files which, according to convention, should correspond to instantiable types, but don't. On a bit of a higher level than naming and file-structure, I tried to split the IO code off from the rest of the program (it has its own little subpackage). I don't feel that I was very successful, but I think that even only the (Haskell-inspired) semiconscious desire to not have IO code coexist with actual program functionality really helped me write clean, clear, and concise code. So, though I didn't really achieve enlightenment so far as IO / pure-functional division of the code, I think the code that resulted is among the cleanest and most beautiful I've yet written, so I'm pretty pleased with that. *I tried to stick to a file-length limit of 50 lines. As I write this version of the readme, only one file (PieceFind.java) goes over that limit, and by less than 10 lines. Holding myself to this standard produced, predictably, a massive amount of tiny files, which I organized into subpackages by general function. Perhaps in the real world 50-lines-a-file is a completely unreasonable standard which decreases clarity by breaking encapsulation (forcing logic to be made public so it can be spread across multiple files), but I think that it's worked pretty well in this case. I, for one, prefer to attack complexity with large amounts of tiny files rather than reasonable amounts of reasonable-length files.
